The Best (and Worst) Days To Send Your Marketing Emails

Table of Contents

You might think that there’s never a bad time to send a marketing email…

But you’d be wrong.

In fact, the metrics that come from email marketing campaigns change from day-to-day. What might work best on a Monday might not particularly perform well on a Thursday, and vise-versa. That’s why I’m here to break down the best days to send your marketing emails, and which days to avoid.

I’m going to break down the open rate, click through rate (CTR), click to open rate (CTO), and unsubscribe rate of each day.

These rates come directly from Campaign Monitor’s yearly Email Marketing Benchmarks Report.

Sunday

Open Rate = 20.3%

CTR = 2.1%

CTO = 10.1%

Unsubscribe = 0.1%

Monday

Open Rate = 22%

CTR = 2.3%

CTO = 10.6%

Unsubscribe = 0.1%

Tuesday

Open Rate = 21.8%

CTR = 2.4%

CTO = 10.8%

Unsubscribe = 0.1%

Wednesday

Open Rate = 21.8%

CTR = 2.3%

CTO = 10.7%

Unsubscribe = 0.1%

Thursday

Open Rate = 21.7%

CTR = 2.3%

CTO = 10.7%

Unsubscribe = 0.1%

Friday

Open Rate = 21.6%

CTR = 2.2%

CTO = 10.1%

Unsubscribe = 0.1%

Saturday

Open Rate = 20.5%

CTR = 2.1%

CTO = 10.1%

Unsubscribe = 0.1%

What Does This Tell Us?

As you can see from the trends above, the open rate tends to peak on Monday and then steadily fall throughout the rest of the week, until the cycle starts again.

What this means is that people are more engaged with their inbox at the beginning of the week, not at the end.

The best day to achieve higher open rates? Monday.

The best day for click through rates? Tuesday.

The best day for click to open rates? Also Tuesday.

In general, you’ll want to avoid sending marketing emails on Saturday or Sunday as those have the lowest open rates and engagement rates, as most people are taking a break from their email inbox.

When Is The Best Day?

It really depends on what objective you’re trying to achieve, but it’s a safe bet to go with Monday or Tuesday to send your marketing emails. You’re more likely to have the user open it, click through it, and interact with the email on those two days.
